So what’s a peta-byte? There’s the million, billion, trillion, and quadrillion – peta is equivalent to a thousand trillion, or also known as quadrillion. Surely, with consumer disk storage capacity in the terabyte region, it’s really unheard of when it comes to peta-byte hard drives. And just recently, IBM has disclosed that they are working on developing the world’s largest data drive ever, whereby they seek to achieve a 120 petabyte data drive, which is built from 200,000 normal hard drives, working in unison inside the system.

Generally, 120 petabytes is equivalent to 120 million gigabytes, and the storage is capable of storing 24 billion, average sized MP3s. Apparently, IBM relies on aligning individual hard drives in horizontal drawers which can be found on most data centers, and they also implemented a new data backup system, which helps feed information on dying disks that would be reproduced on a replacement drive, in order to maintain data consistency. There’s also the GPFS system, which spreads stored files on several disks, and it also allows the machine to read data from different storage parts too. IBM also disclosed that they are developing this system for an unnamed client, but I’m guessing that it’s either Microsoft or Google, as these juggernauts have insatiable appetite for disk storage capacity.
